Specialty Care for Children

Care for Eyes and Vision

Our pediatric eye specialists, ophthalmologists, provide specialized tests and care for children with eye and vision problems. If your child has vision problems, our specialists will diagnose the severity of the condition and ensure he receives eyeglasses and ongoing exams as he grows.

Our specialists also diagnose and treat eye conditions that include:

“Cross-eyes.” This condition is caused by a lack of coordination of the eyes that makes the eyes appear to be "cross-eyed.” It is also called strabismus. Our specialists work with your child to strengthen one eye, using patches and strengthening exercises. Surgery is sometimes necessary.

“Lazy eye.” This condition favors one eye and makes the other look “lazy.” It is also called amblyopia. It is usually treated by having your child wear a patch on the normal eye.

“Goopy eye.” This condition is caused when the tear drainage duct does not open into the nose, causing tears, mucous and bacteria to form around the eye. It is also called nasolacrimal duct obstruction. This may resolve itself naturally or require treatment with massage, medication or a simple procedure to help the eye drain normally.

Eye cysts. Called orbital dermoid cysts, they may form in the eyelid or around the eye and are usually non-cancerous. Our specialists can remove them.
